Survey of New Media Design Study 2: Stories of The River walk

View River Walk in a larger map

This is a locative narrative project that’s purpose is to inform visitors of the River walk in San Antonio Texas of stories from visitors that came before them. There are many different kinds of stories to be told so these stories would be in different categories. The categories are: love stories, medical stories, historical stories, river stories and miscellaneous stories.

Communication method:
The main source of communication for this project is the cell phone. Participants will use their cell phones to call a phone number they find on one of our signs. When they call the number they will hear a story that happened right where they are standing, much like the Murmur project.

In order to start this project I would need to get a good collection of stories to use as recordings. In order to do this I would put up signs asking people to call in and record stories. I would leave those signs up for a couple of months until I got enough stories. Then I would sort them into categories and make new signs. These signs would have the number people would call to hear a story.

Different kinds of stories would be on different signs. The love stories would be on heart shaped signs, the medical stories would be on a medical symbol, historical stories would be on Texas shaped signs, river stories would be on water shaped signs and miscellaneous stories would be on a star shaped sign.

These signs would be hanging up outside each trigger point.

I have chosen seven trigger points for this project they are: The River Center Mall, CVS, Starbucks, Dicks Last Resort, A Garden, The Arneson River Theater and The Alamo. Different signs would be at different trigger points depending on what stories were available.

The Mall is important because it is very large and has the potential to hold a lot of very interesting stories. I chose CVS and Starbucks because they are common places that people go to regularly so it would be interesting to see how experiences change in a place like the river walk. Dicks Last Resort is a restaurant that has to be full of funny stories. I chose the garden because it is a nice place to sit and talk and there are probably some good love stories there. I chose the theater because I was hoping it would have some good historical stories. And I chose the Alamo because it has a huge history that has many stories that go along with it.

This project is a lot like a locative narrative that would happen in Hana Iverson’s class. The point of it is to be informed on what has happened in a place before you were in it.
